A Digital Nomad's Guide to Naples, Italy

I once read that Naples – Napoli in Italian –  is not safe, especially for females traveling alone; I always avoided it. I first passed through Naples 3 years ago on my way to Amalfi by Fiat – it was a cloudy day, and the city seemed busy, covered in garbage. Then, once more, when I passed through the city on my way to the Ischia ferry port; however, the walk from the metro to the port changed my mind. The fresh market was alive, slathered in the brightest greens, tomatoes, and peppers under the glaring sun. Grandmothers were hanging their laundry. Tattooed dads were walking their kids home from school. This city has a heartbeat, and I needed to experience it.

After spending a few weeks in Napoli, I learned not to judge a city from it’s freeway. Napoli has poverty, sure, dancing the line between grimey (be aware, carry mace) and historical, but it is boasting with culture, flavor, and spunk. Also, pizza. The pizza is reason enough.

Getting around

Naples is big and best seen by foot, because each corner has a new story to share. I recommend giving yourself time to walk to your destinations; however, there are cobblestone streets and hills, so wear comfortable footwear. Uber is available, but I experienced some drivers canceling rides – if that is the case, you can use taxis, but first check the price on Uber for comparison.

Trips from Napoli

  • Pompeii is a short train ride away – be sure to pack water and sunscreen, because Pompeii is not shaded.
  • The islands off the coast of Napoli are also worth visiting; the ferry is easy, affordable, and located at the central port.

Where to stay

There are 3 areas that I recommend from my time in my Napoli; luckily, transportation is not difficult, so I recommend checking each one out:

  • Centro Storico: this area is perfect for exploring the historical sites
  • Central Station: a bustling area, with close access to the train station
  • Quartieri Spagnoli: close to the city center, but a local feel; lots of street art and fantastic restaurants
